Almost failed that lesson tonight. I was heading home from doing a business deal for YugoBernie (the blonde and the redhead will be there Friday, green eyes on both ;) and I happened upon a 350Z on a near open stretch of road. Without fail, 350s always instigate a race and this one was no different. I waited until traffic had totally cleared (those that know the 210 know how empty it gets) and it was on. I gave him the go (since reeling them in is so much of a burn) and I flew by him like he was going still. Moreso that usual, that is :) I knew I had it on the low boost setting (11psi) because of our crappy 91 octane. I check my gauges and the A-pillar reads 1.3 bar. Before I drop a load, I check the AVC-R and it reads 1.35!! WTF? I check the AVC-R settings and they are fine. Duty cycle is low, boost set at .80. Aside from being puzzled, I'm thanking god I didn't fire a piston through my hood. Maybe it was only a spike since I didn't hear any pinging? But the car DID seem almost too fast. So I limp her home and put it into my OFF setting on the AVC-R which is .5 bar. I give it a little throttle on the road home and it hits 1.0 bar on the OFF setting. Okay, something is up. My first guess was a hose and sure enough I popped the hood to find this. Damn you Optima!
Actually, I have to blame myself for this one. At the track a few weeks back, I let some unknown Z owner (not a member, just showed up) borrow my battery bracket to pass Tech. He didn't have one and I wasn't racing. Being the nice guy I am (a curse I tell you), I let him borrow it. Anyone that has an Optima knows how hard it is to put back on the fly. So I left it out and forgot about it. On the NA I barely needed it since it never moved...well, this isn't Kansas anymore Toto...and I paid the price :) So watch it out there guys. If the car suddenly feels CRAZY fast, you had better check things out. I can't imagine what you guys without aftermarket boost gauges would have done. Why I turned a mundane boost leak into a post, I have no idea...I'm bored, sue me.
